Last week I spoke to BBC North West Tonight about the effects of last month’s awful flooding in Flixton and Urmston.
Residents and businesses were left devastated by these floods – and it is right that their plight is being highlighted in the media.
After bringing together councillors, council officers, United Utilities and the Environment Agency together to meet people affected by the floods two weeks ago, I have been clear about what residents now need.
They need a multi-agency response which sets out what the issues are locally and puts in place the measures necessary to protect residents and businesses in future.
After our meeting, both Trafford Council and the Environment Agency are now reviewing their response to flooding so our area can become more resilient to heavy rainfall as climate change makes extreme weather more frequent.
This meeting showed the importance of communication between agencies, councillors and residents – which is vital if we are to improve our response to future floods.
I have also been contacted by constituents in the neighbouring areas of Urmston Meadows and Lansdowne Road who were also impacted by the flooding – and I am following up on their concerns.
Thank you to Anna Jameson and BBC North West Tonight for highlighting the effect that these floods had upon people in Flixton and Urmston.
