I am delighted to see today that the Labour Government has committed to a £1 billion boost for homelessness service to help those who are most suffering from the housing crisis.
From my casework here in Stretford & Urmston, I know how homelessness traps people into a vicious cycle which can leave them unable to escape precarious living situations, often in dwellings which are unsafe and insecure.
Tackling homelessness is one of the biggest issues of our time, and I am proud to see Labour taking immediate action to help those most affected by the housing crisis.
We inherited a housing crisis after 14 years of Tory neglect and a string of broken promises to end rough sleeping on their watch.
Labour were elected in July with a mandate to bring the dithering and delay to fixing Britain’s housing crisis to an end – and we are also bringing forth much-needed reforms to end this problem once and for all.
We are committed to delivering the 1.5 million homes that Britain desperately needs by the end of this Parliament – and we are also beefing up protections for renters which helps prevent current from being put at risk of homelessness themselves.
All this comes alongside our pledge to deliver the biggest boost to affordable, social, and council housing for a generation by reforming our clogged-up planning system.
Housing is so much more than an investment or a commodity – it shapes the opportunities and freedoms we have and provides a safe and secure foundation from which to build a life.
