Seymour Park Community Primary School, in Old Trafford, invited their local MP – Andrew Western – into school, to meet the school council.

Seymour Park had postponed their usual Parliament Week activities (that usually take place in November) to March. They wanted to share how they celebrate and promote democracy with their MP.

During the session, Andrew met with the school council, to discuss the changes they’d like to see around school. The school council, which has members from every year group, are all elected by their classmates.

Lots of interesting suggestions came out of the session – ranging from improvements to playground, to putting new locks on the toilet doors.

Andrew Western, the MP for Stretford and Urmston, said: “It was brilliant to visit to Seymour Park Community Primary School. I got to meet the school council and to find out how democracy is executed within the school setting.

“The pupils explained what changes they’d like to see within school – they had so many wonderful ideas and they articulated them perfectly. It was great to hear their views and to see them positively pushing for change.

“During the visit, the children also asked me lots of questions about my role as their MP. They certainly kept me on my toes!”
