A 6-year-old boy from Partington has taken on a huge challenge, so he can fundraise to help children in his local community.

Torsten Gill, aged 6, from Partington will climb Ben Nevis on Friday 25 August, 2023, to raise funds for The Hideaway in Partington. This money will be spent on Christmas food hampers and toys for local children.

This isn’t Torsten’s first fundraiser either. When he was four, he successfully climbed Snowdon, raising money for the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. He’s also taken part in a roly-poly challenge and the Junior & Mini Great Manchester Run for charitable causes.

Torsten met up with Andrew Western, the MP for Stretford and Urmston, to chat about his latest fundraising endeavour.

Andrew said: “Climbing Ben Nevis is no small feat and it’s amazing that Torsten has decided to take on this challenge to help other children in the community.

“Christmas will undoubtedly be a tough time for many and the money Torsten raises will make a huge difference to families in our area.”

Torsten has been visiting The Hideaway since he was a baby. When he decided to climb Ben Nevis, his mum, Natasha helped him to write a letter to The Hideaway, asking if he could fundraise for them.

Natasha says: “I’m so proud of Torsten wanting to actively make positive changes for others. It’s inspiring to see that the small ideas we discuss at home, when we work together, can make a big impact in the wider community. He’s already thinking of his next challenge!”

In 2022, The Hideaway helped 203 households at Christmastime alone. A total of £7,105 was spent on Christmas food hampers and £7,360 was spend on toys.

Bex, from The Hideaway, says: “We’re so grateful for all Torsten’s hard work to raise money for our charity. His efforts and the generosity of those sponsoring him will have a massive impact on the support we’re able to offer to local families this Christmas. We wish Torsten the best of luck for the climb!”
