Andrew recently attended an event which aims to that ensure every school in the UK has a library with a librarian. The event was hosted by the Great School Libraries Campaign.
Research from the Great School Libraries Campaign shows that most schools who do not have a library, give ‘a lack of space’ as the main reason – this is something that schools want, but they need support to achieve. The same research also indicates that libraries in secondary schools may have dropped by 10% over the last three years.
Andrew Western, the MP for Stretford and Urmston, said: “I was very fortunate to meet the children’s author Michael Rosen, who is supporting the Great School Libraries initiative.
“Speaking to the policy specialists at the meeting, it became clear that there is a huge variance in terms of the quality of school libraries, meaning that many children have less opportunity to develop a love of reading, or enhance their research skills.
“I’ve asked for information about Stretford and Urmston’s school libraries to be shared with me as soon as they have it available.”
