Andrew Western has attended a drop in event in Parliament to show his support for Carers Week 2023. The aim of Carers Week is to raise awareness of unpaid caring and shine a spotlight on the millions of people who do so much to look after friends and family in communities across the UK.
Unpaid carers go to extraordinary lengths to care for and support loved one, but this can take a huge toll on their own health, finances and relationships.
Andrew Western said: “During this event, I spoke to a number of charities supporting carers, and to carers directly.
“It was an excellent event, but it was the session I attended to speak to young carers about their experiences that really brought home how much more we should be doing to support those with caring responsibilities. Just chatting to these incredible young people for a short while impacted me. It’s obvious the barriers they face in education, in their social lives and as they consider their future options. I’ll be taking an interest in this area in future.”
Led by Carers UK, this year Carers Week is supported by six other major charities: Age UK, Carers Trust, MND Association, Oxfam GB, Rethink Mental Illness and The Lewy Body Society.
