Yesterday, Andrew Western – the MP for Stretford and Urmston – attended the Opposition Day Debate on Water Quality, where Labour tried to end the Tory sewage scandal.
The Conservative Party has allowed our waterways to be treated as an open sewer. Every river is affected, with very few now meeting good ecological standards.
Andrew Western said: “Not only have the Conservatives given the green light for water companies to dump sewage and neglect our water infrastructure, but it has rewarded them for it through extortionate dividends, and bonuses for negligent water bosses.
“Unsurprisingly The Tories voted to keep dumping raw sewage into our environment.”
Labour will end this Tory Sewage scandal. We will legally enforce the monitoring of sewage outlets, impose fines for sewage dumping, implement legally binding targets to reduce sewage dumping events and publish a sewage discharge reduction strategy. By doing this our rivers will once again become healthy and safe for us all to enjoy.
